Your return policy is one of the most important settings on your eBay store. It directly affects your search ranking, buyer trust, and whether you qualify for Top Rated Seller status. Get it right and you will sell more. Get it wrong and you will lose visibility and customers.
Why Your Return Policy Matters
eBay's Cassini search algorithm gives preference to listings with buyer-friendly return policies. Listings with 30-day free returns rank higher in search results than listings with no returns. This is not a theory — eBay has confirmed this publicly.
Beyond search ranking, a generous return policy builds buyer confidence. Shoppers are more likely to purchase when they know they can return if something is wrong. Counterintuitively, offering free returns often results in fewer returns because buyers feel less pressure and make more confident purchases.
The 3 Return Policy Options
1. No Returns — You can choose not to accept returns, but this is the worst option for search ranking and buyer trust. eBay still requires you to accept returns for items that arrive damaged, defective, or not as described. You cannot avoid returns entirely.
2. 30-Day Returns (Buyer Pays Shipping) — This is the minimum recommended policy. Buyers can return within 30 days but they pay for return shipping. This satisfies eBay's requirements for most seller levels.
3. 30-Day Free Returns — The best option for Top Rated Seller status and maximum search visibility. You pay for return shipping. This sounds expensive but the increase in sales usually far outweighs the occasional return shipping cost.
Recommended Policy for Dropshippers
If you are dropshipping from Amazon to eBay, we recommend 30-day free returns. Here is why:
- Amazon already offers free returns on most items, so you can return to Amazon if a buyer returns to you
- Your return rate will typically be under 3% — the cost is minimal
- The search ranking boost will generate significantly more sales
- You qualify for eBay Top Rated Seller discounts (up to 10% off final value fees)
If you are dropshipping from AliExpress, use 30-day returns with buyer paying shipping. AliExpress returns are more complex and international shipping costs make free returns impractical.
Restocking Fees
eBay allows you to charge a restocking fee of up to 20% on returned items. However, we do not recommend this for most sellers. Restocking fees create friction and negative feedback. The exception is high-value electronics where returns can significantly impact your margins.
How to Handle Returns as a Dropshipper
When a buyer requests a return, follow this process:
- Accept the return request immediately — never let it expire
- If the item was from Amazon, return it to Amazon for a full refund
- If the item was from AliExpress, contact the AliExpress seller for a resolution
- Issue the eBay refund as soon as you receive the item back (or immediately if it is a defective item)
- Never ask the buyer to return to your supplier directly
Top Rated Seller Requirements
To qualify for eBay Top Rated Seller status and the associated fee discounts, you need to offer 30-day (or longer) returns with free return shipping on eligible items. The benefits include up to 10% discount on final value fees, a Top Rated badge on your listings, and higher search placement.
