eBay Returns for Dropshippers: Handle Them Without Losing Money

Returns are part of the game. Handled badly they wipe out your profit; handled well they cost little and protect your account. Here is how dropshippers manage returns when the stock is not in their hands.

The Dropshipper's Returns Problem

You never held the item, and you do not want it shipped back to your home. Meanwhile your supplier is overseas and will not accept a UK return easily. So returns need a different playbook from a normal retailer.

Offer Returns Anyway

It is tempting to set "no returns" to avoid the hassle. Do not. eBay favours listings with returns in search ranking, buyers trust them more, and under consumer law UK buyers often have return rights regardless of your policy. A reasonable returns window converts better and protects you. Offering 30-day returns usually pays for itself in extra sales.

The Math of Refund vs Return

For low-value items, doing the maths often shows that a partial or full refund without a return is cheaper than paying return postage on an item you cannot resell. If a £6 item would cost £4 to return and cannot go back to your supplier, refunding and letting the buyer keep it can be the profitable choice. Decide case by case on the numbers.

When a Return Makes Sense

For higher-value items, accept the return. Provide a return label or address, and once it arrives, inspect and refund. If your supplier offers returns or replacements, route it back to them. Keep records of every step in case eBay reviews the case.

Handle Item-Not-As-Described Carefully

INAD cases are weighted against sellers and count toward your defect rate. The best defence is prevention: accurate descriptions, honest photos, correct item specifics, and realistic delivery dates. Most INAD cases trace back to an overclaim in the listing.

Build Returns Into Your Margins

Assume a small percentage of every product line will be refunded. Price with that built in, the same way a shop prices for shrinkage. A few percent of returns baked into your margin means a return never turns a profitable product into a loss-maker. Use our margins guide to set the buffer.

Keep Your Metrics Clean

Respond to every return request fast and politely, even the unreasonable ones. Quick, courteous resolution keeps cases from escalating to eBay and protects your seller rating. Your reputation is worth more than the cost of one refund.
