eBay UK Restricted Words List 2026: The 1,197 Words That Get Listings Removed
Most sellers think a banned listing means a banned product. Often it is just one word in your title. Here is how eBay UK's hidden block-word system works, the categories that trip it, and how to list without losing listings or strikes.
What eBay's Block-Word System Actually Is
When you click list, eBay runs your title and description through an automated filter before a human ever sees it. If it spots a word tied to a restricted or prohibited category, the listing is blocked, hidden, or removed within minutes. You usually get a vague message about policy, never the specific word.
The current UK block-word export contains 1,197 terms. They are not all illegal items. Many are everyday products that eBay restricts because they need safety marking, age verification, or supplier paperwork that a dropshipper cannot provide.
The Main Categories (and Why They Trigger)
1. Cosmetics & personal care
Perfume, aftershave, cologne, lipstick, retinol, hyaluronic, minoxidil, whitening cream. Cosmetics need ingredient compliance and CPNP/UK registration. eBay restricts most of them for new and unbranded sellers.
2. Batteries & chargers
CR2032, 18650, button cell, lithium, li-ion, wall charger, power adapter, universal charger. Battery safety is one of eBay's most aggressive filters because of fire risk and UKCA marking rules.
3. Baby & nursery
Baby, infant, newborn, cot, crib, pacifier, teething, swaddle, sleep positioner. Child-safety items carry strict standards. Several — like cot bumpers and sleep positioners — are outright banned after safety recalls.
4. Health, supplements & medical
Supplement, vitamin, melatonin, probiotic, ozempic, semaglutide, inhaler, syringe, catheter. Anything ingestible or medical is heavily restricted and often prohibited entirely.
5. Tools, blades & sharp items
Knife, razor, scissors, axe, machete, chisel, saw, multi-tool. Bladed items require age-verified delivery and UK stock — impossible to satisfy when shipping from overseas.
6. Alcohol, tobacco & weapons
Wine, beer, vodka, vape, nicotine, taser, pepper spray, crossbow. These are licence-controlled or outright illegal to post, and carry the heaviest penalties.
7. Pet health
Flea treatment, wormer, dog supplement, cat vitamin. Veterinary products are regulated and restricted on the platform.
Two Kinds of Flagged Word (This Distinction Saves Your Account)
Not every flagged word means you must drop the product. There are two very different cases, and treating them the same is how sellers get suspended.
Wording problem. The product is fine, but a word in the text trips the scanner. A phone case described as having a "razor-thin" edge does not sell a razor. Remove the word, keep the product.
Product problem. The word describes what the item actually is — perfume, battery, supplement. Deleting the word just hides a genuinely restricted item. eBay can still detect it from the category, images, or a buyer complaint, and that gets you a defect or suspension, which is far worse than a blocked listing. In this case, do not rename it — skip the product and find another.
How to List Safely
Screen every title and description against the restricted list before you publish. Rewrite incidental trigger words, and walk away from genuinely restricted products. For sourcing, lean toward categories with light regulation — home, garden (non-bladed), kitchen storage, accessories, stationery, and gadgets without batteries.
If you list at volume, manual checking does not scale. This is exactly why UnicornDS now ships a built-in restricted-words guard: it scans each product against the full eBay UK block-word list (updated 31 May 2026) and warns you before listing, so you can edit or skip. You can read more in our guide to avoiding eBay suspension and the VERO brand list.
Keep the List Fresh
eBay updates restricted categories regularly. A word that was fine last quarter can be blocked today. Whatever system you use, make sure the word list is dated and refreshed — an out-of-date list gives false confidence.
